Alton, Virginia - SRO America is already in full swing with the preparation for the series swing to the East at the VIRginia International Raceway on June 4th through 6th. After an uncertain few months into the new year, SRO America and VIR are ready and excited to welcome eager race fans back into SRO’s open paddock.
The return to an open paddock layout is a fan-favorite feature. A general admission ticket is all that’s needed for fans to interact face-to-face with their favorite drivers and teams and get arm’s length views of the GT and touring car machinery. Camping weekend passes that take advantage of the tremendous natural beauty of the VIR campus are also available for fans that want to witness the racing from the great outdoors. For veterans, SRO is teaming with Operation Motorsport and USO for the Salute to Service Weekend that will offer free and discounted admission prices for service members and their families, as well as special parking privileges. For the younger crowd, the VIR Kids Club will be in full swing where children receive autographed posters following the all-ages Fan Forum with CrowdStrike/AWS drivers Kevin Boehm and CJ Moses.
Tickets are on sale and excitement is building for the return to the hustle and bustle of a fan-filled race weekend. Additionally, teams and competitors in the paddock that call the area “home” are ready to go. In fact, between teams and drivers either hailing from or residing in the southern Virginia metro area, all the series in the SRO paddock have their fair share of participants from the Old Dominion.
DXDT Racing is not quite in the rolling hills that encompass VIRginia International Raceway, but since moving from their home base in Utah, the SRO regulars can now consider VIRginia International Raceway their home track, being a scant two-hour drive away. That makes it all the more convenient for DXDT Racing’s CJ Moses, competing in the GT America powered by AWS double-header weekend at VIR, who hails from Nokesville in the northern part of the state. Moses, who was able to start his GT America bid at COTA’s Race 2 earlier this month, cleared eleven positions to capture a top-ten finish on his first race in GT3 machinery. He’ll look to improve this showing in his bid for the podium.
Also a hop, skip and a jump north of VIR is the community of Manakin-Sabot, part of the Greater Richmond area. That’s where Wright Motorsports’ driver Charlie Luck used to call home. Luck is off to a good start this season in the GT3 category, sitting solidly in second place after three podiums in four races.
In Pirelli GT4 America, two drivers call the Old Dominion home, in more ways than one. BimmerWorld Racing principal James Clay, is quite familiar with the Blacksburg, Virginia metro, where he spent his days at Virginia Tech and ostensibly his nights growing his company BimmerWorld. Now based out of Dublin, a mere half-hour from Blacksburg proper, both Clay and the BimmerWorld Racing team can consider this leg of the series a “home game”, a welcome advantage as the team looks to get its season started in earnest after a tumultuous showing at both the Sonoma opener and the follow-up rounds in Austin.
Series newcomers Random Vandals Racing, based out of Great Falls, Virginia, an area just outside the Washington, DC metro, find themselves in a good position with the team at the fifth position in class. Principal and driver Paul Sparta, also hailing from Great Falls, hopes to ride a successful COTA bid that saw the team take a podium and a top-five win back to their home state for the upcoming competition.
In the TC America powered by Skip Barber series, the full-series weekend at VIR marks a return to Luke Rumburg’s home state, as well. Originally from the community of Beaverdam in central Virginia, the Forbush Racing driver hopes the familiar scenery will allow him to better his pair of top-ten finishes in the TCA class in Austin.
Finally, the most literal homecoming of all sees Arlington, Virginia, offspring Rob Hines prepping for the race weekend at his team’s residence, TechSport Racing, which is based out of the Alton, Virginia location outside of VIRginia International Raceway grounds. Hines’ continues his TC class aspirations in this homecoming event, sitting in sixth place in the Driver’s championship before entering VIR weekend.
Fan tickets for the weekend are available at SRO America series sites. Competitors enter official practice for the double-header weekend on Friday, June 4th. All fans can catch the series racing livestream on GT World’s YouTube channel or simulcast on SiriusXM Satellite Radio with weekend highlights packages available on CBS Sports Network.
