Sonoma, CA - The Racers Edge Motorsports duo of Shelby Blackstock and Trent Hindman grabbed both overall GT World Challenge America powered by AWS poles at Sonoma Raceway Saturday morning. Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2020 championships will take place this weekend at the 2.5 mile, 12-turn natural terrain circuit in Northern California.
The 30-minute qualifying session, split into two 15-minute heats to set the grids for Saturday afternoon's Round 5 and Sunday's Round 6, were held under sunny and 63-degree Fahrenheit weather conditions. Five minutes into the first heat as tire temps dialed in, Silver division competitor Blackstock, piloting the #93 Racers Edge Motorsports Acura NSX GT3, Pro/Am driver GMG Racing's James Sofronas in the #14 Porsche 911 GT3 R (991), and Pro/Am driver Squadra Corse's Martin Fuentes in the #1 Ferrari 488 GT3 all spent a moment on the top of the charts. Ultimately Blackstock's fastest time of 1:38.608 topped Sofronas' 1:39.042 and Fuentes' 1:39.204. Am competitor Wright Motorsports' Fred Poordad in the #20 Porsche 911 GT3 R (991.II) had the fourth fastest time of the session (1:40.062)
In the second heat, Hindman, who took over for Blackstock behind the wheel of the #93 machine, picked up right where his teammate left off and promptly set the early fast time of 1:37.961. From there he improved to a 1:37.365 and never relinquished the top spot. DXDT Racing's Colin Braun in the #04 Mercedes-AMG GT3 will start second overall and first in the Pro/Am category (1:37.708). Am driver Max Root, in the #20 Porsche 911 GT3 R (991.II), will start sixth overall and first in class (1:38.133).
